Description

Authentic Philly cheesesteak recipe with tender ribeye steak, melted cheese, and caramelized onions. Learn traditional Philadelphia techniques for perfect homemade cheesesteaks.

Ingredients

Scale

2 lbs ribeye steak, thinly sliced

6 long hoagie rolls

2 large yellow onions, sliced

1 jar Cheez Whiz (or 12 slices provolone)

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Partially freeze ribeye steak for 30 minutes to make slicing easier

Slice steak paper-thin against the grain using sharp knife

Season sliced steak with salt and pepper

Heat 1 tablespoon oil in large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat

Add sliced onions and cook 15-20 minutes until caramelized and golden

Remove onions and set aside

Add remaining oil to pan and increase heat to high

Add sliced steak and cook 2-3 minutes, breaking up with spatula

Add caramelized onions back to pan with meat

Warm hoagie rolls in oven or toaster

Add cheese to meat mixture and stir until melted

Divide meat and cheese mixture among hoagie rolls

Serve immediately while hot and cheese is melted

Notes

Ribeye steak works best but sirloin can substitute for budget option

Slice meat paper-thin for authentic texture – partial freezing helps

Traditional cheese options are Cheez Whiz, American, or provolone

Caramelize onions slowly for best sweet flavor development

Cook meat quickly over high heat to prevent toughness

Serve immediately for best texture and temperature

Can prepare components ahead but assemble just before serving

Use authentic hoagie rolls for proper bread-to-filling ratio
